Ranch Property Near Salida Gets Protection

SALIDA, Colo. (AP) -- Open space advocates and property owners have reached an agreement that will protect a 220-acre meadow outside Salida from development.

In 2003, the historic Hutchinson Ranch and homestead was listed in the top five endangered places in Colorado by preservationists.

The working cattle ranch has been in the Hutchinson Family since the 1860s, before Colorado achieved statehood.

The agreement puts half of the ranch under permanent protection. It also gives the ranchers the money need to continue to work the land. The value of the deal has not been announced.
