New Organization Re-Launching Firefighter's Calendar

DENVER (CBS4) - A new organization has taken over a firefighters' calendar and promises the money will go to help young burn victims.

A CBS4 "4 On Your Side" investigation revealed a criminal investigation into the calendar's founder. 4 On Your Side Investigator Rick Sallinger found the accounts were co-mingled and money intended for young burn victims may have gone for personal use.

A new organization called the Colorado Firefighter Calendar has now been formed.

"We have strong individuals in this organization that have pulled together and we're not letting the past stop us," Colorado Firefighter Calendar president Perry Palmer said. "We're moving forward."

The past involves Kirsten Hamling, the founder of the now dissolved Fired Up For Kids, which started the calendar in Colorado. It filed with the state as a nonprofit organization. Its website said it donates all proceeds benefitting The Children's Hospital burn unit.

Funds from the Fired Up For Kids account show money went to a Disneyland trip, fitness center, pet store, restaurants, groceries, liquor, a nail salon and more. Suddenly the website was changed to say only a portion of the proceeds from it were being donated.

The new organization has made changes designed to insure the money goes where it is intended.

The district attorney's investigation continues into whether any criminal charges should be filed. Hamling is cooperating with the new organization.
