Man's Body Pulled From Under Thin Ice After Trying To Save Dog
FOUNTAIN, Colo. (CBS4)- A man was pulled from an icy pond south of Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon after he fell through thin ice trying to save his dog. The man did not survive.
It happened just before noon Saturday at Willow Springs in the Fountain Regional Park area.
"He got down on his hands and knees, and then walked out towards and to the dog," said Casey O'Malley, who was fishing at the pond at the time. "At that point the owner did fall through the ice. He and the dog struggled for a second. The owner was able to get the dog up onto the ice."
The man wasn't able to pull himself out.
Firefighters from the Fountain Fire Department rushed to the scene where they pulled the man from the freezing water. The man was under the water for about an hour and a half before he was found and pulled to the surface.
Firefighters had a tough time finding the man because the water was very murky. The pond was about 12 feet deep and the water temperature was 39 degrees.
Paramedics began resuscitation immediately and he was rushed to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The man's dog survived.
Fountain is located about 10 miles south of Colorado Springs.
