Voters Keep Eagle's Lone Medical Marijuana Dispensary Open

EAGLE, Colo. (CBS4)- The lone medical marijuana dispensary in Eagle has won the battle to stay open.

Votes cast in favor of Sweet Leaf Pioneer staying in business totaled 634 to 491 opposed.

The dispensary opened in 2009 after getting a permit from Eagle. In February 2011 the town board of Eagle decided to ban medical marijuana dispensaries, including Sweet Leaf Pioneer.

The dispensary decided to file a petition to force a municipal election.

"We had to get 190 valid signatures and I think we turned in about 290," said Sweet Leaf owner David Manzanares.

When the signatures were validated, there were only 200, but it was enough for an election.

"We were supposed to close down in November, so we went back and asked to stay open until the ballot issue," said Manzanares.

The owners said after all the ups and downs they are looking forward to the future.

"We've gotten nothing but positive feedback on our end but then again, no one against is going to come up and tell us about it," said Manzanares.
