LA JUNTA, Colo. (CBS4) – There was a close call for a dog that ran after some geese on a frozen pond in La Junta.
The golden retriever found himself struggling in frozen water as his golden retriever friend anxiously looked on. Susan Schneider captured the drama on video as she was walking her own dog.
“I was pretty scared. I was pretty worried about that poor dog,” Schneider said.
Schneider called for help and soon firefighters with the La Junta Fire Department arrived. They extended a ladder into the water. It took 20 minutes and the help of a firefighter who stretched out across the ice to pull the frigid dog to safety.
“My heart just wept with joy,” Schneider said.
The cold dog was wrapped in a warm blanket and firefighters delivered both the dogs to their owner.
“A beautiful ending to a harrowing story,” Schneider said.
The dogs apparently escaped from their backyard. The owners had been out searching for them when they heard about the ice rescue.
