ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Police in Arapahoe County say they believe a man who was found dead early Monday morning was murdered.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s office says deputies found the man with a single gunshot wound to the head in an SUV in the 1100 block of South Xenia Street. He was found at about 3:10 a.m. after someone called 911 saying shots had been fired in the area.

The man was 43 and so far his name hasn’t been released.

So if the Sheriff’s Department says they believe the man was murdered, why is CBS4 reporting the man was “apparently murdered?” Apparently, you have another un-cited source saying it’s apparent that the man was apparently the victim of an apparent gunshot wound.

Unlike CSI Miami, they don’t have instant access to all the forensic reports etc…If the guy was sitting in the car with a bullet in his head and there was a bullet hole in the window it would be apparent that it was not self inflicted; however, I am sure they are waiting for all the reports to come in before reporting the facts to the press. Rememeber there was a case a few years back where a lady was dead in a car from an apparent auto accident. After the autopsy and the investigation, the accident was staged and she was actually murdered before the accident.

This is supposed to be journalism. Not creative writing. The only source cited in the story is the Sheriff’s Department. They say they believe the man was murdered and are investigating the incident as such. There is NO source cited anywhere saying this is a “apparently” a murder. It’s an unnecessary and inaccurate word plugged into the headline that alters the perception and interpretation of the facts as told by the source cited. There is no source anywhere that says this is anything but a homicide.

An additional story posted on the CBS4 site Tuesday morning cites the man as a “murder victim.” I doubt CBS4 got access to the crime lab reports of an active homicide investigation overnight and independently determined that the word “apparently” should be omitted from future headlines. My Guess: Simply a different writer excerising the craft of journalism more appropriately.
