Man Organizes Holiday Drive To Help Fire Victims In Grand Junction
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (CBS4) - A family who lost everything in a fire earlier this month got an incredible Christmas surprise after a man organized a secret charity drive.
Steve Stewart is a member of the Grand Junction Lions Club. After hearing that a family with two young children, ages 5 and 8, lost everything in a fire earlier this month, he collaborated with American Furniture Warehouse as well as other local stores in town to collect clothing, shoes and other household items.
The items ended up filling a storage unit. It included beds, a TV, kitchen items, and Christmas presents for the children -- all presented to mother Jacinda Koehler in time for the holiday.
"I just want to help everybody who helped us out," Koehler said.
Stewart also used funds from the Lions Club to get the family $200 in gift cards from Walmart to get whatever else they may need.
The family thought the storage unit was being given to them to help store any belongings they had collected as they're getting back on their feet. They had no idea it was filled all the furnishings they need for a new home.
