More Than 60 CU Students Displaced After Sorority House Burns

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Just over 60 students at the University of Colorado Boulder are without a home for the spring semester after their sorority house burned.

The fire happened at the Kappa Alpha Theta house overnight. It's located in the 1300 block of University Avenue off campus.

The fire started in the attic of the home. The Boulder Fire Department says that the fire caused about $1 million worth of damage, mostly from water and smoke.

None of the sorority members were at the home. The house mother, Jane Gray, and the house dog, Brodie, were in the house when the fire started and both got out safely.

"We offer all kinds of resources from counseling, psychological services, to assisting them with any academic needs to continue their course work. We'll work with them to get temporary computers, textbooks, things of that nature, clothing through the Red Cross," CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said.

The university will also help all of the sorority members find new housing. They'll be out indefinitely at this point.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the fire department says the house was inspected this fall and was up to code.
