Guard, Inmate Dead In Colorado Prison Van Crash

LIMON, Colo. (AP) - A guard and an inmate are dead after a prison van lost control on an icy highway on Colorado's plains.

The Colorado State Patrol said the van crashed Monday on Interstate 70 about five miles east of Limon.

Authorities said the van was carrying nine inmates and two employees of the Corrections Corporation of America, a private prison company based in Nashville, Tenn. The prisoners were being transported from CCA's Kit Carson Correctional Facility in Burlington to the Limon Correctional Facility.

Trooper Nate Reid said the other eight inmates and one staffer were taken to hospitals with moderate to serious injuries.

Colorado's plains are being hit by a storm producing blizzard conditions in some places. The National Weather Service said there was freezing drizzle near Limon at the time of the crash.
