DENVER (CBS4) – Rep. Diana DeGette took a shot at Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler on Saturday. She says he’s turned Colorado into Ground Zero for voter rights suppression.

Gessler fired back, accusing DeGette of taking a political cheap shot.

DeGette was speaking at the state Capitol and taking part in a global effort to promote human rights. As part of that effort, the Denver Democrat accused Gessler of seeking to remove inactive voters by not mailing ballots to minorities who might not have the means or time to go to the polls.

“It’s clear, sadly, that these efforts are being funded and driven by a blatant desire for electoral gain by those who believe that the voters might stand in the way of their political ends,” DeGette said.

“I have no idea where our votes do or don’t come from along those lines. It’s a political cheap shot and she’s trying to avoid accountability for the economic failures going on in Congress right now,” Gessler said.

Gessler says there should be nothing to prevent inactive voters from getting a mail-in ballot. All they’d have to do is ask for one. Gessler also says he will appeal a court ruling that prevented him from keeping county clerks from mailing ballots to inactive voters.

It seems to me that the question is a fair one, considering that activists from one party dominate the voting machine industry! It also seems fair, given the wholesale denial of voting rights in other states, to ask if it is happening here.
Mr. Gessler should not try to obscure the issue…just answer honestly.
Voter’s rights are important to EVERY american, regardless of party of politics.
Trying to call it political makes me wonder what he is hiding.

Ms DeGette makes unfounded accusations against Secretary of State, Scott Gessler for publicity. She wants hispanic votes. But– why come up with bogus stories about Mr. Gessler– everybody knows DeGette is pro illlegal aliens on every issue. She has done a lot of harm to Colorado swampng us with the illegals– and making US pay for them.

DeGette’s attempts to smear Gessler does not. DeGette’s dirty business is very well known and no one believes she is interested in “human rights” at all. She is only interested in what benefits her.

Diana DeGette may want Hispanic votes but the Hispanic community has her figured out. DeGette and her fellow Democrats have failed to keep their promises to the Hispanic community. She should stop making false promises and she should not take the Hispanic vote for granted

DeGette is a self-serving politician who twists facts to suit her needs. Rep. DeGette’s voting record clearly shows that she does not have the country’s best interests at heart. She cares more about re-election than anything else.

Well those ballots are expensive to make and send, so how long do you keep sending them to people who don’t vote? I am not sticking up for DeGette or anyone else, just common sense. Maybe they shoulld make some sort of rule about how long to send non voting people ballots, who cares what ethnicity they are. I get mine in the mail but I vote every time I get one, if I am not sure about an issue or person I just don’t vote in that catagory. Also, News 4, have you checked this story to make sure its true? I’d like to know more about how she came up with this……..this may not even be true and a moot point! Just because she threw this out there doesn’t mean its true…..this is what politicians do folk!
