Vail Hospital Mourns Loss Of Doctor After Crash On Slopes

VAIL, Colo. (CBS4) - The staff at the Vail Valley Medical Center is grieving after a popular colleague died while skiing at Vail on opening day.

Dr. Charlie Tuft was fatally injured on a beginner run Friday morning. He was taken to the hospital where his friends and coworkers tried to save his life.

Tuft was an emergency room doctor. He set up a house-call medical service a few years ago.

"He really developed a concierge type of service where people knew, 'Call Charlie when you were in trouble at home, at night, the next morning. Let's see what you can do to my indigestion, or is it really chest pain?' And that's the kind of guy Charlie was," Tuft's friend Dr. William Sterett said.

Tuft was an accomplished skier. He lost control on a beginner run and hit a tree. He was wearing a helmet.
