Thief Steals Car With Child In Back Seat

DENVER (CBS4) - A car was stolen with a 3-year-old child in the back seat Monday afternoon.

Police said the suspect stole the car with the boy in it near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. The car was found abandoned a few blocks away at 5th and Albion and the child was found safe.

Police said the woman driving the car was the child's nanny. She told police she witnessed an elderly man fall and she got out of the car to help him when the suspect came out of nowhere and jumped in her car and drove away.

"It's unfortunate," said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "The young lady was trying to be a Good Samaritan and somebody takes advantage of the situation."

Police said the woman flagged down another car and the stranger let her in his car and they began to chase the suspect. The suspect sideswiped another car and then ditched the stolen car and ran off.

A manhunt is currently under way for the suspect who is described as a 6-foot-tall white man with a pony tail. He was wearing black jeans and a blue jacket and had a medium build.

The child's father said his son was doing okay when he arrived at the scene.
