Tipton Gets Support For Chimney Rock Designation

DENVER (AP) -- Rep. Scott Tipton is winning support for his proposal to make Chimney Rock a National Monument.

U.S. Forest Service Associate Chief Mary Wagner told the House Committee on Natural Resources on Thursday that the site is historically significant. She said the ancestors of modern Pueblo Indians occupied the lands surrounding Chimney Rock, and the site remains archaeologically and culturally significant to many tribes.

The site was designated as an Archaeological Area and National Historic Landmark in 1970. Four sites have been excavated for tours, including the Great Kiva, Pit House, Ridge House and Great House Pueblo.

Supporters said the legislation would provide more protection and recognition for the site, which is located between Durango and Pagosa Springs.
