Weather Causes Only Minor Issues At DIA

DENVER (CBS4) - The winter storm on Wednesday caused only minor issues at Denver International Airport.

Snow showers at DIA had tapered off significantly Wednesday afternoon with only intermittent flurries. The airport did not expect any additional meaningful snowfall the rest of the day.

There were no major impacts to flight arrivals or departures as of 3:25 p.m. Wednesday. However, a total of 59 departure cancellations occurred earlier in the day.

United Airlines reported that they canceled seven flights in the early part of the day.

Airlines continued to operate in full de-icing mode which may impact passengers spending extra time on their aircraft before departure. Given the temperature drop overnight, de-icing is expected to continue through Thursday morning.

DIA snow crews were keeping airport roadways, taxiways and runways clear. Visibility was good Wednesday afternoon.

"On a day like today the airlines really use their own discretion about whether or not to de-ice their aircraft, but generally across the board you're going to see that happening," DIA spokeswoman Jenny Schiavone told CBS4. "If you're leaving this morning or throughout the day the temperatures are cold enough that you may see yourselves waiting on a de-icing pad."

The roads to and from the highway were wet but not covered with much snow after sunrise on Wednesday.

All passengers are urged to check with their airline before heading to the airport. Although Peña Boulevard conditions were clear, it was wet and slick in some spots, so anyone driving to DIA is advised to allow plenty of extra travel time.
