Teen Drivers Learn Skills Behind The Wheel

DENVER (CBS4)- Hundreds of teen drivers hit the streets with designs on learning the rules of the road with safety in mind.

About 250 young drivers learned some valuable lessons about staying safe this weekend thanks to Toyota and Bass Pro Shops.

The businesses teamed up for a program that puts drivers in real life scenarios and prepares them with defensive driving skills.

During the two-and-a-half hour program, teens drove through multiple driving courses geared toward teaching defensive driving skills and crash avoidance techniques.

The instructors also informed the teens about the dangers of distracted driving and delayed reaction time.

"Caution, children playing sign. Did you see that out there? That's an easy one to miss especially when occupied by other things like texting, easy things to miss when paying attention to our phones and annoying passengers," said Teen Driving Instructor Chris.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in Colorado and across the country, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Saturday wrapped up National Teen Driver Safety Week.
