Basalt Resident Challenging Grocery Bag Fee

BASALT, Colo. (AP) -- A Basalt resident is gathering signatures to try to overturn a town ordinance imposing a 20-cent fee on paper and plastic grocery bags.

Council members approved the fee last month and the measure is scheduled to go into effect in May. Resident Roy Chorbajian tells The Aspen Times he believes people are tired of government regulation.

Chorbajian started collecting signatures Saturday. He has 90 days to collect signatures from 231 registered Basalt voters. The question of whether to rescind the ordinance could go to voters in April or in a special election if Chorbajian gets enough signatures.
