9-Year-Old Awarded His Own Service Dog

GLENDALE, Colo. (CBS4) - A Denver boy with challenges in life will soon get the gift of a lifetime.

Spencer Findley, 9, will be awarded his own service dog. He has a form of muscular dystrophy and is losing muscle and gets tired easily when walking.

Milk-Bone and King Soopers partnered to connect Findley with Canine Assistants. That's a group with specially-trained dogs for people with disabilities.

Findley's mother, Terri Findley, said the four-legged friend will forever change their lives.

"We see this dog as an opportunity for him to have a best buddy with him all the time. Someone who can go to school with him, can sleep in his bed with him at night and really just be a true companion for him," Terri Findley said.

Findley will travel to Georgia in the coming months to be matched up with his own dog. It takes up to 2 years and $20,000 to train the dogs to become service pets.
