Western State College Officials Mull Name Change

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Just months after Mesa State College changed its name, Western State College is considering whether to change its name -- possibly to a name Mesa State decided not to use.

Western State President Jay Helman tells The Daily Sentinel the school in Gunnison is considering whether to use a new name that will likely contain a combination of the words "University," "Western" and "Colorado."

Mesa State had considered changing its name to University of Western Colorado but chose Colorado Mesa University instead after Western State trustees said they didn't want any other Colorado college using the words "Western" or "West" in their names.

Western State officials say a name change isn't certain.
