Fire Heavily Damages Home In Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Firefighters in Aurora are investigating what sparked a blaze that did $200,000 worth of damage to an Aurora home.

They were called to the home at 2280 Emporia just before 10 a.m. where the fire was burning in interior rooms and filled the home with smoke.

The firefighters first had to punch a hole in the roof to get the smoke out of the house so they could fight the fire. It took them about 20 minutes to get it out.

Three of the four people who lived there were at home but all managed to get out safely. One person who lived in the home was a special needs child.

"It's always worrisome when have people home at the time of the fire so making sure the fire is empty and making sure that we didn't have anybody trapped is always our greatest concern," said Capt. Allen Robnett of Aurora Fire.

Because the fire was burning in several rooms in the middle of the house, the smoke filled the home, causing much of the damage.

"The structure itself can be repaired," Robnett said, "but that extensive smoke it will ruin clothes, it ruins your food, ruins carpets, wall coverings and window coverings as well."

"There are toxins in the smoke that make it important for you to discard all food products. In carpeting the odors will never go away. Usually the smoke damage will make it impossible for you to repaint or paint over the drywall so that has to come out as well."

Several pets were killed in the fire. The Red Cross is helping the family.
