La Junta Mom, Son Killed In Crash On US 350

TIMPAS, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado State Patrol says a one-vehicle crash on U.S. 350 has killed a La Junta woman and her 6-year-old son. Three other children are injured.

Troopers say Jessica Maldonado was heading east Tuesday afternoon when the tread of her right rear tire separated from the tire, causing her Dodge Durango to run off the road west of Timpas and roll. The State Patrol says Maldonado wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected, along with two boys, ages 3 and 6. Troopers say it appears the boys were in booster seats but weren't belted in.

Maldonado and the older boy died. Trooper Arthur Gumke says the younger boy is in critical condition.

He says a 2-year-old girl and a 3-month-old girl were restrained and had moderate to minor injuries.
