Colorado Legislative Maps Sent To State Supreme Court

DENVER (AP) - New proposed state legislative districts that could make one-third of Colorado's races competitive have been submitted to the state Supreme Court for approval.

An 11-member bipartisan panel submitted the maps it agreed on last month to the court Tuesday. If approved, the court can file the maps with the Secretary of State's office by Dec. 14.

The proposed maps would make 11 of the 35 seats in the Senate competitive. Twenty-two of the House's 65 seats would also be considered competitive.

The approved maps also account for the Hispanic population's explosive growth since 2000. Twenty-four of the 100 seats in the Legislature would be districts where at least 30 percent of voters are Hispanic.

State legislative districts are redrawn every 10 years to account for population changes.
