Man With Cerebral Palsy Credits Best Friend For Saving His Life

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – Two men are still recovering after a narrow escape from a kitchen fire two months ago., and now one man says he owes his life to the other.

Flames roared from the home in Colorado Springs over the summer. Two men lived in the home — Jon Kammerling, who has cerebral palsy, and his best friend Raymond Becker. Becker is still being treated for second degree burns after he raced back into the house to rescue his friend.

The two men have very different takes on what happened.

“It’s time to repay him for all he’s done for me and step up to the plate. It’s not been easy, mind you, but it’s something that we have to do,” Kammerling said.

“All I could think of was he’s trapped, I have to get him,” Becker said. “I can’t let him be burned by my mistake. I mean I still have trouble not blaming myself for this,” Becker said.

Becker says he blames himself because he was making lunch for both of them when the fire started and his first reaction was to run. But Kammerling disagrees.
