K-9s Help Officers Get Their Man In Greenwood Village

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (CBS4) - A masked robber is behind bars after a holdup using a BB gun at a restaurant in Greenwood Village.

The crime happened on Sunday afternoon at Sazza's Restaurant at Orchard and University in Greenwood Village. Police say Sky Walker Traphagan, 24, walked into the crowded restaurant and demanded money.

After giving the money that was in the register Ian Dawson, a server, and a cook chased the suspect in their car and called 911. Dawson told CBS4 his instincts "went to the wind" and he "just went after him."

Police set up a perimeter and the police department called in their K-9 team. The dogs Tag and Magnum went to work.

Magnum located the weapon-- which was a BB gun -- and the ski mask in a dumpster.

Tag ended up tracked the suspect hiding out in some bushes a few blocks away. Police say the stolen money was nearby.

"At that point I saw the suspect's legs hiding and with the help of a couple of deputies from the sheriff's office we arrested him at gunpoint," Officer Bryan Stuebinger said.

Officers said the finds by the dogs were exceptional. Tag is new to the K-9 team and in the past week he has located two different felony suspects with weapons.

"The dog pretty much pulled me to right where he was," Stuebinger said.

Dawson says he's relieved "it all ended up being good in the end" and that no one was hurt.
