THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) – A police officer on a motorcycle has been hospitalized after getting struck by an SUV on Interstate 25 Saturday morning.

The accident happened just after 8 a.m. Northbound I-25 was closed for more than four hours in the 8900 block.

The Thornton police motorcycle officer was performing traffic enforcement on I-25 when the crash occurred. Police said they believe the driver of the SUV was drunk or on drugs.

“As he was pulling out to chase down a violator he was rear-ended by a red SUV,” Lee Vitgenos with Thornton police said.

Police said the officer had his emergency lights and siren on with the crash occurred.

“Probably 50 yards of debris from impact to where the bike is,” witness Jeremy Garcia said.

The officer was conscious and breathing. It’s believed he suffered a broken pelvis.

The driver of the SUV was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving.
