Colorado Immigrant Rights Groups Oppose Crackdown

DENVER (AP) – Colorado immigrant rights groups are demanding changes to a report that recommends softening the Department of Homeland Security’s controversial effort to identify illegal immigrants.

The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition is holding a rally on Monday at the Denver Immigration courthouse to demand that government officials suspend enforcement until changes are made.

They say the report falls far short of addressing flaws that prevent the program from being a law enforcement tool that respects community policing, civil rights, and does not operate outside its mandate.

The federal task force is recommending that federal officials only use the program to identify serious criminals and not people accused only of minor traffic offenses, and that crime and domestic victims and witnesses not be subject to enforcement actions.

I thought we believed that there was a dignity shared by all humanity? I didn’t understand that what was meant by the declaration was that “We hold these truths to be *promulgated by law(until amended or repealed),* that all *Citizens can try to be equal*, that they are endowed by their *Congress* with certain *alienable* rights (when congress has sufficient support to alienate them), that among these *may* be Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

        Certainly there are rights inherent to all people that all individuals possess simply as human beings, yes? Then there are others that are bestowed by a governing body. Isn’t it a matter of deciding what those rights are? I’ll run to an extreme in the hopes of showing that we do agree that their are some rights that we possess as human beings. Our disagreements then arise when looking at government bestowed rights and in deciding what those rights should be and of those which should be withheld. My hypothetical demonstration of the extreme will be just that hypothetical. Would it be just to give the government the authority to enact legislation that gave any citizen the right to torture and kill anyone they suspected of breaking immigration laws? It would truly sadden me if anyone believed that an individual loses their inalienable right to life (and freedom from torture) by transgressing an immigration law. So, if their is a right to life that comes from ones standing as human, and not ones nationality then might there also be a few other rights? If so, then the discussion should be about which rights are possessed by all and which rights are possessed only by US citizens and the reasons why. That was the only movement in the debate I was attempting in my first post. I was not, Belac, trying to be deliberately obtuse.

    We MUST change the law that says that “if you drop a baby in the US, the baby is a citizen”….it should be: If you are in the country legally and drop one.THEN it is a citizen, if you are not in the country legally, then neither is the baby!.

    Am I missing something here? Since when do criminals deserve any rights? At what point do all of the LEGAL Americans finally say ENOUGH freebies for these illegals? Once and for all, we don’t want you here. Stay in Mexico, or wherever you came from. I am sick to death of paying for these parasites. They are sucking this country dry and we just keep letting it happen. Come on America, let’s do something about it.

      They came through Ellis Island and registered and were checked out for diseases and whatever else the ychecked for at the time. It was done LEGALLY! They also assimilated, learned ENGLISH and followed the laws.

      If they were found to have any strange diseases or were though not to be productive members of society, they were put right back on the boat going back across the ocean!

BUT that was “LEGAL” Immigrants as stated by DR907 and Jeff… I too was an immigrant 30years ago when I was 8months old, but we came here legally and went through the whole process, we weren’t able to just jump a fence, we had to fly over ocean. My parents learned the English language and so did I, we did not ask for handouts and for our language to be put on every piece of paper out today…. I have a job LEGALLY and pay taxes, so I know what everyone is saying, IF YOUR here LEGALLY COOL, but if NOT Get the hell OUT…..

    Since when to Illegals have rights? Are they not breaking the US Immigration Law just being here? For the clueless idiots that want to let them stay here instead of sending then back, please sign up to pay for their medical care, etc, so it does not have to come out of my taxes. I also don’t want to press 1 for English, learn it or LEAVE! Also, if you can not assimilate to the United States then go back to the hole you came from, my grandparents did it, SO CAN YOU!!
