DENVER (AP) – Deportations in Colorado have remained flat in the 10 years since 9/11 despite a heightened emphasis on securing the border and thwarting terrorism.

The Denver Post reports that deportations for illegal entry make up 70 percent of this year’s cases, as opposed to deportations involving terrorism charges. The newspaper quotes data from the nonprofit Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

There were 4,175 deportation proceedings in the state in 2001. In the fiscal year that ended in July, there were 4,098 deportation proceedings. Deportation proceedings have jumped 45 percent nationally in 10 years from 1.6 million in 2001 to 2.3 million in 2010.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say the policies have resulted in more criminals being deported, jumping from 81,000 in 2008 to 195,000 in 2010.
