BLOOMFIELD, N.M. (AP) – The Western New Mexico football team has made it to Colorado for its game against Fort Lewis College, but its equipment didn’t.
The chartered bus carrying the Mustangs caught fire Friday night on a freeway about 25 miles south of Bloomfield.
Authorities say nobody was injured, but most of the team’s football gear and personal items were destroyed.
School officials say a flat tire apparently sparked the fire, which burned the bus down to its frame.
Another bus took the team to Durango for Saturday afternoon’s game at Fort Lewis College. The kickoff has been pushed back 90 minutes to 2:30 p.m.
KOB-TV says Nike has donated shoes to the team and players who stayed on campus are bringing old equipment to Durango. Fort Lewis also is lending some gear.
