Charges Filed In Jeffco Police Impersonator Case
GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - Authorities in Jefferson County have charged a Centennial man who they believe tried to impersonate a police officer.
On July 31 a witness spotted an unmarked car with police lights at Bowles and Wadsworth.
The situation appeared to be a traffic stop of a woman driving alone. The woman never stopped and the witness called the real police.
It came during a time when there were several other similar incidents along the Front Range.
Police now say they think Edward Potter, 58, of Centennial, was in that car. Last month when CBS4 investigator Rick Sallinger briefly talked to Potter he said he is innocent.
"No and why are you here? This is the last thing I need. I'm innocent of this and trying to prove it," he told Sallinger from inside his home.
Potter's car, a Crown Victoria, was seized by police some time after the incident as part of the investigation. Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies said last month his car has red, blue and amber lights installed inside, as well as a strobe light.
Police said a Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy was in the car with Potter at the time. That person committed suicide last month.
