BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) – The former Fort Morgan city manager died of an apparent suicide two days after appearing in court on a child pornography summons.

The Fort Morgan Times reports that the Adams County coroner and Brighton police say Patrick Merrill led officers on a low-speed chase shortly before his death Friday morning. Officers found Merrill dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after the chase.

Officers had been asked to check on his welfare and spoke to him on a cell phone during the chase.

The Adams County coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Merrill received a severance settlement of about $77,000 from the city in mid-January shortly after he was put on leave.

Details of the child pornography summons were not immediately available.

I guess the want or need to have porn of children must be so great that people risk being prosecuted to do so. That’s the only thing I can figure out. These people must know that they are probably being tracked on their computer but take the risk anyhow. I think that these people should talk themselves into therapy and get help, that would be the smart thing to do. This crime is probably one of the sickest accept for murder. Its just all too common these days.

Well said. But in this case Merrill had not been officially charged with any crime nor had he been found guilty by a jury of his peers. He was going a rough divorce and his wife had deemed mentally unstable to see their son unsupervised. And as Merrill was moving back to Michigan It seems his wife set out on a plan to destroy Pat and gain custody of their son. I believe the truth will be much different as what conclusions the media directs our minds to. Watch for the truth to come.
