Fort Carson Soldier Accused Of Possessing Child Porn

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Fountain found an explosive device when they arrested a man for sexual exploitation of a child Tuesday afternoon.

Police say Radoslaw Jan Szczepanski, 47, had child pornography on his computer. A computer store discovered the child pornography after Szczepanski brought his computer in for repairs in April and alerted authorities. Police then began the investigation and Szczepanski turned himself on Tuesday.

Doug Southard with S & D Computer Repair and Parts said he was just finishing with Szczepanski's hard drive when he came across dozens of images of child pornography.

"I was just going through to check and make sure what virus was on his machine," Southard said.

Southard then alerted Fountain police and then confronted Szczepanski.

"He asked how it was going on his machine and I said, 'Well, Fountain P.D. has it.' And all I heard him say was, 'Ah, sh--,' forgive my language, and walked out the door," Southard said.

Authorities recently contacted Szczepanski's home on a weapons complaint. He had allegedly been shooting guns off of his back porch. But neighbors say for the most part he kept to himself.

"We do have a lot of kids in the neighborhood and I'm just kind of glad that they actually got him and they're doing something about it," neighbor Michael Hunt said.

"Based off what was observed on the computer is they were likely off of commercial porn sites," Cmdr. Mike Hanley said.

Investigators were also worried Szczepanski's home might be dangerous. While they were executing a search warrant they found a hand grenade.

"Detectives had information that weapons and/or explosives may be in the residence," Haley said.

The bomb squad said the grenade was inactive.

According to Army officials, Szczepanski was transferred to the Fort Carson Warrior Transition Unit several months ago. Officials say he was planning to retire soon.
