Suspect Shot By Thornton Officer Still In Critical Condition

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) - A 39-year-old Thornton man is in critical condition and two police officers are on paid administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting on Monday.

The incident was first called in as a domestic dispute at a home near 97th Avenue and Downing. Officers had been called to the home, at 9791 Downing Street, several times in the past, including the night before.

Police said there was a physical disturbance in the front yard and a lot of screaming when police arrived. They say Carlos Jose Castro started toward officers with a knife.

One officer used a taser that apparently wasn't successful in restraining the Castro. Another officer fired the shot or shots that struck him.

Neighbors told CBS4 the situation unfolded while they were watching.

"It was almost point blank," Sean Schroder said. "Officers were about 10 feet away. He grabbed his stomach and fell to the ground."

The police officers who fired the gun and taser are the ones who are on paid administrative leave. The Adams County Critical Incident Team is investigation the situation.
