Dillon Police Officer Dies After Motorcycle Crash

HEENEY, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer has died after suffering chest and head injuries in a motorcycle crash that happened while he was off duty.

The Summit County Coroner's office says in a release that Dillon police officer Jim Schaffer's motorcycle crashed into a delineator post late Sunday morning after its brakes locked. He was thrown from the motorcycle in the crash before it landed on him. He was not wearing a helmet.

The coroner's office says Schaffer was flown to St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood, where he was pronounced dead at 4:48 p.m.

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating. A toxicology test shows alcohol was not a factor.
