Hurricane Irene Disrupts Travel At DIA

DENVER (CBS4)- Some airlines flying in an out of Denver International Airport have already decided to cancel flights that were headed to the East Coast.

Southwest Airlines has opted to temporarily suspend service to and from Norfolk, VA on Saturday. Service will resume depending on the condition of the airport in Norfolk once Hurricane Irene passes through.

Frontier Airlines has also cancelled flights for Saturday to LaGuardia and Washington, DC from Denver, Milwaukee and Kansas City. On Sunday, the airline has cancelled flights to Newark, NJ, Boston, Hartford, CT and Philadelphia.

"There will be a meeting of all types of operational people and they will review the status of the storm for everybody and then we'll get reports from our different stations, operating locations, destinations that we fly into along the coast as to what's going on in those areas," said Frontier Airlines spokesman Peter Kowalchuk.

One family visiting Colorado cut their vacation short because of the Hurricane so they could return to Connecticut today.

"We are a little concerned about what the situation is going to be like in the next couple of days. We have pets at home that we want to make sure are okay," said traveler Maria Hawkins.

People with plans to travel to the East Coast in the next few days are encouraged to check with their airline's website about the status of their flight.

Most airlines are offering refunds if they cancel your flight. Many are waiving their rebooking fees if passengers reschedule their trip before a flight is cancelled.

DIA spokesman Jeff Green said that 60 flights have been cancelled so far for Saturday for United/Continental and Southwest. Frontier Airlines hasn't provided exact cancellation numbers to DIA, but is expected to Saturday morning.

The FAA is reporting that JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Airports will suspend operations for arriving flights.
