Missing Infant Found, AWOL Soldier Arrested

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- The search for a soldier who went AWOL from Fort Carson is over and his baby daughter has been located.

One-month-old Brooke Hembree was found at a fire station in Lawton, Okla. The suspect, Derik Hembree, dropped off the baby to a fire department lieutenant then ran away.

He was arrested after dropping off the girl. Lawton Police Lt. Bill Grimes said Hembree left a note with the child's name. Officers had been alerted earlier to be on the lookout for Hembree.

Hembree, 24, and his daughter Brooke hadn't been seen since Aug. 4. He allegedly took the baby in violation of a custody order. Hembree's ex-fiancee, Nicole Brewer, has not been reached for comment.

The couple had a rocky past. In July court documents show Hembree tried to get a restraining order against Brewer, allegedly to get full custody of their daughter.

The Department of Human Services is making arrangements for Brooke's return to Colorado Springs.

Hembree had been AWOL from the Army since May.
