Feds Hunt Down Sex Offenders In Metro Area

DENVER (CBS4) - Several law enforcement agencies across Colorado are carrying out one of the biggest sex offender busts in state history.

Officers arrested the first suspects before dawn Monday. Agents are tracking down sex offenders who haven't registered.

"They're out there, they've failed to register and they could be going back to those crimes and committing more sex assaults," said Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officer John John Fabbricatore.

Teams of officers are patrolling the Denver metro area through the month of August. The U.S. Marshals office is conducting one of the most comprehensive busts on non-complying sex offenders the region has ever seen.

A dozen agencies are working together to sweep those offenders off the streets, including Denver Police, the Denver Sheriff,Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Corrections and Aurora Police.

"It's a huge asset to be able to get a bunch of agencies on the street and share those assets and share all the skills that the different agencies have to go out and look for these guys," said Fabbricatore.

This year could be the busiest sting so far. It continues through Aug. 28.

"Every year it has increased. The first year we had 54, the next 72 and last year we had 151," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Roberto Rodriguez.
