Family Of Killed Motorcyclist Reacts To Sentencing Of Driver

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- The teenager who was behind the wheel, under the influence of several drugs, when he crashed and killed a man on a motorcycle, was sentenced on Friday.

Joshua Wittig, 19, was sentenced to ten years and six months in jail. Wittig was convicted in May of vehicular homicide under intoxication.

John Hines, 33, was killed when Wittig's SUV crossed over traffic, colliding head on with Hines.

The judge said Wittig should have never been behind the wheel of a car with the toxic combination of drugs in his system including Xanax, marijuana, Percocet and Valium.

The judge also said the police interview with Wittig showed that he had little remorse.

Wittig addressed that interview during his sentencing. He said, "Some of you think I'm horrible. When I saw those interviews in court, I thought so too. But the person I am standing here is who I am. I wish I had passed away that night, not John Hines. I think about John Hines every day and his family."

Hines left behind a daughter, Olivia, who was just two years old at the time of the crash. The rest of his family is devastated.

"Live your life now and live it the way you want to live it," said Hines' sister Cara.
