Kids In Need Get Head Start On Health Care

DENVER (CBS4) - Hundreds of children are headed back to school healthy as dozens of health care professionals volunteered their time at the annual Healthy Kids Fair on Saturday.

Families lined up outside the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless in downtown Denver for free immunizations, vision, hearing and dental screenings.

Physicians say it's important to get the children on the right track before school starts.

"Children who are homeless are more likely to have health issues, so they're twice as likely to have ear infections; they're four times as likely to have asthma attacks; they're five times as like to have stomach problems," Dr. Martina Schulte said. "So they are much more likely to experience the things over children experience, but just at a much higher rate."

It was the 20th year for the health fair. Each child also received a backpack full of new school supplies.
