Holding Off On Minor Car Repairs Can Lead To Bigger Issues

DENVER (CBS4)- According to a AAA survey, a growing number of Americans can't afford car repairs. It found that 25 percent of drivers admitted to neglecting repair and maintenance because of the economy.

Mechanics believe simple maintenance done when recommended, like an oil change or changing the air filter, can keep your vehicle running well.

When people neglect their cars, it can lead to costly repairs.

At the Good Neighbor Garage, a non-profit organization, people donate broken vehicles that will be fixed and sold to families in need at a low cost.

Mechanic Art Volmer said he sees major repairs that could have been avoided with routine maintenance. He also said get to know your mechanic.

"Find a mechanic that you can trust and establish a good working relationship with him," said Volmer. "You can also ask the mechanic to prioritize the repairs. Say, well, I have the money to fix the most critical and then write out a plan for me to come back when I can save up for it'," said Volmer.
