Dad Testifies Against Douglas County School Vouchers

DENVER (AP) - A court hearing on whether to halt Douglas County's school voucher program continues in Denver.

The Denver Post reports that among those testifying Wednesday was a father of three who opposes using tax dollars to send students to private schools. Kevin Leung said the program takes needed money away from public schools and will hurt his daughters' schools.

Opponents also say the program amounts to government sponsorship of religion because vouchers can be used at religious schools.

A lawyer for supporters, James Lyons, says it's "religion-neutral" because parents and students decide where to use the vouchers.

Douglas County has issued quarterly voucher checks to pay tuition for about 200 students. Classes haven't started for them yet but the district says some have already bought uniforms and signed up for sports teams.
