Funnel Cakes And Drag Queens At The Denver County Fair

DENVER (CBS4) - Funnel cakes and drag queens -- Denver's first ever county fair has it all.

"That's one of the reasons we wanted to come support it. It's funny - for such a big city we didn't have one," Vivian Gembara said.

Organizers of the fair say they've got all the best aspects of a traditional county fair but tweaked it a bit for the Denver urban crowd with a freak show and drag queens.

"Our Miss County Fair pageant, which was huge last night, was all drag queens and it was won by Nuclea Waste," said Dana Cain, fair organizer and co-founder.

Cain's vision includes psychics, holistic healers and a freak show.

"It attracts a new crowd and just brings out different people. Not so country western -- a twist to a whole new thing," Dale Heath said.

They have a little bit of everything for any age, young or old at the Denver County Fair. The 1980s band Devo will perform Saturday night. The show starts at 8 p.m.

The fair runs until 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Children under five are free.
