After 66 Years, Colorado Soldier Gets His Medals

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A World War II veteran received an honor that was 65 years overdue on Monday.

Russell Aulston, 93, was in the infantry. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Rep. Ed Perlmutter and Aulston's great granddaughter awarded him his war medals.

Aulston received the Bronze Star for fighting with valor, Prison of War Medals for surviving a German camp, and a Purple Heart for the shrapnel that's still in his hip.

Aulston's grandson Darrel Aulston worked for months to make sure his grandfather got his due.

"He deserves everything that he can get, as does every veteran out there," Darrell Aulston said.

Darrel Aulston said he considers his grandfather his hero, but Russell Aulston said he was not a hero and that he was just doing his job.
