Rock-N-Roll Foundation Helps Find Bone Marrow Donors

MORRISON, Colo. (CBS4) - Only 5 minutes. That's all it takes to sign up to be a marrow donor.

There's something going on behind the music at some of the biggest venues in town. "Love Hope Strength" took the stage at Red Rocks. It's a rock-n-roll foundation that helps save lives at concerts.

At the concert Jen Garner shared her battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma to help get people to sign up for the marrow donor registry. All it takes is 15 seconds of swabbing a cheek with two Q-tips. The information then goes into a data base. The potential donor will be contacted if they can be someone's life-saving match.

Love Hope Strength has found 26 matches at Red Rocks and 54 potentially life-saving matches at events across the state.

The more people they add to the registry, the more lives they save.

Garner's brother, Jordan Crabtree, went to Red Rocks last year. He found out 2 weeks ago he could be a match to a baby boy. It's a brother and sister sharing a unique bond.

"I was scared at first. I couldn't believe it. I was in complete shock," Jordan said.

As Jordan gets ready to donate he will get support from his sister, who knows first-hand how marrow transplants can save lives.

"Our whole family is 100 percent behind him -- 200 percent," Jen said.

The realization has set in that Jordan can help save a baby from a life-threatening disease that nearly took his sister.

"It's pretty amazing," Jen said as she hugged her brother.

"Hopefully within the year we can get the baby boy to Red Rocks so everyone can hear his story," Jordan said.

Sign up to be a marrow donor on Aug. 7 at the Step Up for Cancer Event. They found a potentially life-saving match at last year's event.

Step Up for Cancer is at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. The fundraiser benefits Love Hope Strength and a number of important cancer related charities.
