DENVER (AP) – Frontier Airlines is canceling flights for the fifth straight day with many of its large planes still out of service because of hail damage.

Spokesman Peter Kowalchuk says 39 flights were canceled Monday and another 18 flights are being scratched on Tuesday. The airline has contracted with charter airlines to replace 36 flights.

The airline says it’s also helping passengers find seats on other airlines and using aircraft from other Republic Airways subsidiaries.

A thunderstorm that swept through Wednesday brought hail that damaged nearly a third of Frontier’s large airplanes. Five have since been returned to service.

Planes that suffer hail damage on the leading edge of their wings aren’t safe to fly with passengers because the dings prevent the aircraft from getting maximum lift.
