Stolen Car Victims Could Lose A Lot More Than Their Car

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (CBS4) - Summer is prime time for car thieves. Last month 570 vehicles were stolen in Colorado.

On Wednesday members of auto theft task forces from all over Colorado were at Comfort Dental Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village to get out their warning with a recovered stolen vehicle that had been stripped.

It's not just cars thieves are looking for. With identification and a garage door opener a criminal can also rob a home and steal an identity.

"The thieves are out there. You need to be on guard. Just take some simple steps by locking your vehicle, not leaving a spare key or an ID in there," Carole Walker with Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association said.

July and August are the peak months for stolen vehicles in the U.S.
