Feds Propose Elk Hunting On Colorado Refuge

DENVER (AP) - Federal officials are proposing to open a national wildlife refuge in north-central Colorado to more hunting.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Tuesday that it is proposing expanding hunting opportunities on 10 wildlife refuges across the country. One of those is the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge in north-central Colorado, where elk hunting would be allowed for the first time.

Bird hunting is currently allowed on the refuge near Walden. Fish and Wildlife is taking public comments until Aug 4. on expanding hunting.

Federal officials say hunting is an important tool for managing wildlife, including controlling animal populations.

The Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge is in a glacial basin south of Walden ringed by mountains. The wildlife found there includes waterfowl, moose, deer, elk, coyotes, pronghorns, muskrats and beavers.
