Police: Elderly Springs Man Loses $130,000 To Scammers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say scammers have bilked an elderly Colorado Springs man out of $130,000 over two years.

Police said Saturday the scammers convinced the man he had won $1 million and two cars but had to send money to them in order to collect his winnings.

Colorado Springs police Sgt. Chuck Potter says the scammers called repeatedly to demand more money and even called while officers were in the home interviewing him.

Police say a convenience store clerk alerted officers that the man was buying thousands of dollars worth of transferrable money cards. The man's name hasn't been released.

The scammers claimed they were in Las Vegas but investigators believe they were in Jamaica or Nigeria.

Potter says it's unlikely the man will get his money back.
