Smoke jumpers came in from Canon City to help fight the fire. They are originally from Boise, Idaho, but have been in Colorado for almost the entire fire season. They are jumping out of a plane called an Otter.

Fire investigators do not have an exact cause of the fire, but believe it was likely caused by lightning due to several strikes in the area.

For the record the Astar AS350B3 is a Type III light helicopter which usually uses a 144 gallon bucket. Monument Helibase has only the one light helicopter and no Type II medium on base.

  2. Jafco says:

Douglas, Jefferson and Park counties have a Type II medium helicopter on a call when needed contract but it has not been called as of this time to assist. The counties helicopter is based in Castle Rock and on ready status.
