Police Identify Wrong-Way Driver Killed In Crash

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Lakewood have identified the driver in a wrong-way crash that shut down 6th Avenue for a couple of hours on Saturday.

Police said Harold Krikpatrick, 85, was driving a car the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of 6th Avenue at about 10 a.m. after entering the freeway in the wrong direction at Garrison Street. His car collided head on with a Jeep Liberty at the Kipling exit.

"It's just tragic, to be quite honest with you. We don't know what happened. Once the investigation is completed and we have all the answers, then you can look at what happened, why and if there could have been anything to prevent it. At this point, it's just a tragedy and at this point we really don't know exactly what happened, other than somebody is dead as a result," said Lakewood Police Agent Steve Hipwell

The Jeep then collided with a third vehicle which caused minor damage.

Kirkpatrick died from his injuries several hours after the crash at St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood. The driver of the Jeep was treated for her injuries.

Eastbound lanes of 6th Ave. were closed from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
