Hit-And-Run Victim: ‘She Didn’t Help At All’
DENVER (CBS4)- A little boy who was struck by a car while riding his bike last weekend said he remembers everything that happened. Jiovanni Tinoco Valdez is still in a lot of pain.
“I was hurt really bad,” said Jiovanni. “She just ran me over for no reason.”
The 11-year-old is recovering from his injuries at Denver Health Medical Center. He was struck at about 8 p.m. on June 18 at Irving Street and Dakota Ave.
“She hit the front of the bike,” said Jiovanni. “I saw her get out of her car and that’s all. She didn’t help at all.”
Police in Denver said they’ve arrested the woman who was driving drunk when she hit Jiovanni with her car, stopped to grab her hubcap and drove away. Brittany Gonzales, 21, is charged with vehicular assault, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence.
Jiovanni said he was riding through the intersection when he was hit.
“There was a stop sign, she passed it, and she ran me over,” said Jiovanni.
Witnesses said Gonzales got out of her car and yelled for someone to call 911. Then, according to police, she grabbed her hubcap and took off.
“I got a couple of bruises here and my other leg,” said Jiovanni. “I have to stay in here and the pain hurts.”
He broke his leg and needed surgery so doctors could place a flexible nail in his bone. Jiovanni is also recovering from staples and stitches. He is expected to make a full recovery, but he must be able to put pressure on his leg and walk with a walker before he can leave the hospital.
Gonzales is out of jail on a $50,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on July 6.
