Fire Forces Evacuation Of Church Camp In Southern Colorado

WESTCLIFFE, Colo. (AP) - A wildfire burning in southern Colorado that has forced the evacuation of a church camp has spread to about 1,000 acres.

Crews were attacking the fire near Westcliffe from the air on Monday. It broke out Sunday afternoon and spread quickly in dry conditions.

About 180 people were evacuated from the Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp in Custer County Sunday. Residents of about 50 homes in neighboring Fremont County have been urged to leave, but it's not clear how many have decided to evacuate.

In southeastern Colorado, crews are close to containing three large wildfires that broke out last week, including two on Fort Carson's Pinon Canyon Maneuver site.

Meanwhile, southbound Interstate 25 south of Trinidad is closed because of a wildfire burning in New Mexico near Raton Pass.
